How To Connect USB Modem To Google Nexus 7 tablet

As we all know the Google Nexus 7 tablet doesn’t have native 3G support other than Wi-Fi , so today I will show you how to connect a 3G USB modem to Google Nexus 7 tablet to access the internet.

It should be noted that you can connect your 3G/EVDO modem/dongle not only to  Google Nexus 7 but any Android tablet with Android Os 2.2 and up with root access and USB host to access the internet even if it is wifi-only.

Before we connect USB dongle to Nexus 7 or any Android tablet tablet make sure you follow steps explained below :

1. You must root your tablet.

2. Make sure to turn off Wi-Fi

3. OTG cable and 3G USB modem/dongle ready for use.

4. You must disable PIN of USIM or 3G SIM.

How to connect USB modem to Google Nexus 7 Tablet :

Now first we need to install free widget called PPP widget to Nexus 7 tablet, Click here to download from Google Play Store.  After installation of PPP widget you won’t notice any shortcut on the screen, now just add the widget on your screen manually, anyway its widget. While placing a widget on your screen for the first time you have to grant root privileges to the app.

Now insert the USIM/3G SIM in USB dongle and connect to tablet with OTG cable. Now click on configure button of widget and input the parameters of your operator such as Access point or APN, User Name and Password. In the picture shown below you can see I configured access point of Vodafone. In case User name and Password is not provided by your operator then just set any User Name and Password. So if you are planning to use AT&T on Nexus 7 then your configuration – Access Point Name : broadband , User Name : Anything , Password : Anything.

The tablet is now configured to use with a 3G USB modem, now disconnect the modem from the device and connect it again. Now click on connect button of the PPP widget if everything goes well you can see connected on the widget on your screen.

Your Google Nexus 7 tablet is now connected to internet via 3G USB dongle, everything works perfectly like Play store, apps etc. This procedure is verified to use with Huawei E367u–2 modem but all other USB modem should work similarly, such as ZTE MF-190, E-169G, E176G, E-1732 etc. Any Android tablet should work with this method.

Keep in mind that PPP widget app is still in beta and you may find some bugs while using it. You should also know that you must have root privileges in order to use this widget.

may be you can connect it even without root with default settings. root is mandatory with PPP, I am not sure with ZTE AC2737 as it is reliance EVDO and not 3G network. Have you tried connecting Huawei 3G modem with 3G network such as Airtel, Vodafone etc?

Success: I used my rooted Nexus 7 (maybe not necessary) with StickMount. My USB dondle is a prepaid Tata-Photon+ (Olive:V-ME102). Access Point Name was left empty. Username was “internet”. Password was “internet”. Dialing string was “#777”. I discovered that using a USB hub allowed me to connect to a keyboard+mouse, pen-drive and the dongle too. btw, do not forget to disconnect the wi-fi.

Rooted nexus 7 and using reliance with ZTE MF190, provided APN, as soon as the modem is plugged in, it grades out configure and connect button and gets hung at “Prepare Device” Any suggestions?
